BioNova Press Release - Halifax Nova Scotia, April 24, 2008

Dr. Maurice Laycock, a researcher with a long career in the life sciences, was recognized by his  peers at BioNova's annual Celebration of Research Excellence.

BioNova named Dr. Laycock the 2008 recipient of its Research Excellence Award, which is presented annually to a member of the research community who has made outstanding contributions to the growth of the life sciences industry in Nova Scotia.

"We instituted the Research Excellence Award as a way of recognizing the importance of science as the foundation for a successful life science industry said Marli MacNeil, BioNova's Chief Executive Officer.  "Dr. Laycock is a fine example of how excellent research has led to commercial opportunities for Nova Scotia companies."

Dr. Laycock has maintained an outstanding career as a chemist that spans over 40 years.  He retired in 1996 from the National Research Council Institute for Marine BioSciences, where he had distinguished himself for his work in marine toxins. He is currently the Chief Scientist at Jellett Rapid Testing Ltd., a firm based in Chester Basin that manufactures and markets tests to detect the presence of the three most harmful types of shellfish toxins that can pose life-threatening risk to human and animal health.

In addition to his valuable work at Jellett, Dr. Laycock has made significant contributions in collaboration with scientists at Ocean Nutrition Canada (ONC), and Jellett's predecessor, Jellett Biotek Ltd. His groundbreaking involvements in the development of technologies such as the NRC's Certified Reference Material Program, ONC's glucosamine supplement production, and Jellett's rapid tests for harmful marine toxins have resulted in commercial success for the life sciences industry in Nova Scotia.

"In nominating Dr. Laycock for this award, his colleagues said that his 'commitment to scientific method, his personal integrity and his ability to lead others have not only played a crucial role in commercial endeavors in Nova Scotia, but have contributed greatly to the realm of food safety on an international scale,'" MacNeil noted. "We're delighted to be able to share his story with a wider audience."

The award presentation took place at the Halifax Marriott Harbourfront, where Nova Scotia high school students were also recognized for their success in the Sanofi-Aventis BioTalent Challenge, a biotechnology competition that was held on Thursday morning at the IWK Health Centre.
